What's On Around Knaresborough

The medieval town of Knaresborough enjoys a great tradition of community led events which prove tremendously popular with visitors and draw crowds from far and wide.

Perhaps the biggest – certainly in terms of its international reach - is the world famous Knaresborough Bed Race!

First held in 1966, this extraordinary event takes place in June of each year and combines a serious sporting event for elite competitors, with a fun filled parade beloved by the whole community!

90 teams comprising 6 runners and a passenger will race through the narrow medieval streets of the town pushing a bed on wheels (yes - a bed!) which includes a crossing of the fast flowing River Nidd – not for the faint hearted!

This Knaresborough event is truly unique and whilst it may have spawned many imitators around the world – the Knaresborough Bed Race is the original and best!

Knaresborough also has an active and vibrant tradition which includes the annual poetry and performance festival Release the Hounds, and FEVA - the visual arts festival held every August – a glorious and eclectic celebration with a very inclusive offering.

Enjoy open air street theatre and music as well as live performances in a range of venues both in and around town and an art trail as well as opportunities to explore your own creativity!

A variety of open air events take place in Knaresborough town and its imposing Castle, from the Spring Fayre to the Medieval day, often spilling out into the Market Square.

When looking for what’s on in Knaresborough you’ll find there are great events right through the year.

Over the first weekend of December, Knaresborough’s Edwardian Christmas Market marks the start of the festive season for many.

A truly traditional offering based around the town’s picturesque market square where the visitor can browse stalls selling unique gifts, hand crafted Christmas decorations, Christmas trees and traditional Christmas food and drink whilst enjoying a programme of events and entertainment all weekend long.

What better way to get into the Christmas spirit?
