What's On Around Ripon

Ripon never stops!

Whatever time of year you plan to visit there are events in and around the city to inspire, excite, educate and amaze you!

The City’s vibrant community and extraordinary cultural and historic heritage combines to offer a rich programme with something to appeal to all.

The splendid Ripon Cathedral forms the backdrop to many events which bring together the community and its visitors to celebrate more than 1000 years of culture in the city – from the nightly setting of the watch by the Hornblower to the annual St Wilfrid’s Procession in July to celebrate the city’s patron saint with lots for all the family.

Christmas is a very special time at the Cathedral with a full programme of cultural and choral occasions which are perfect for experiencing the wonder of the season.

The arrival of Spring is heralded with a lively programme – the nationally famous Pancake Races see cassocked clerics and locals alike racing down Kirkgate on Shrove Tuesday with frying pan in hand – whilst the warmer weather also marks the start of the season at Ripon Racecourse with its full schedule of racing (as well as many non-race day events for all the family).

This historic city is blessed with a richness of visitor attractions in or close by, all of which host their own full programme of events – the National Trust World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal offer visitors of all ages the opportunity to experience culture, history and the natural world, Ripon Museums Trust gives insights into the hardships of life gone by whilst Lightwater Valley Theme Park offers special events for thrill seekers in addition to its normal opening times.

Newby Hall is a popular venue for festivals, fairs and exhibitions.

Autumn welcomes the Ripon International Festival which attracts visitors from far and wide to deliver an eclectic range of music and culture to its delighted audience.

And let’s not forget Market Day– stallholders cluster around the obelisk in the Market Square every Thursday come rain or shine – attracting bargain hunters as it has done for centuries!

Whatever the month, whatever the day – you will be amazed what’s on in Ripon to keep you and your family entertained.
