Parks & Gardens in Harrogate & District

Visit the Harrogate District and be spoiled for choice by our gardens, formal watergardens and landscaped woodlands!

Harrogate is blessed with two very special gardens – RHS Harlow Carr, a treat for all ages with planting ranging from woodland to wildflower meadows, an Alpine House and a learning centre.  You can even take some of its floral beauty home when you visit the shop and garden centre, or treat yourself by rounding off your visit at the neighbouring Betty’s Café Tearoom for a fat rascal or something equally delicious!

In the centre of Harrogate is the world famous Grade II listed English Heritage Valley Gardens which have drawn visitors ever since their creation.   Covering 17 acres adjacent to the equally popular Pinewoods, visitors can while away the hours enjoying refreshments in the Magnesia Well Café, strolling the paths, admiring the iconic Sun Pavilion, Colonnades and Band Stand whilst the younger members of the family will love the skate park, games area and fabulous adventure playground!

Ripon's Spa Gardens are another beautifully preserved reminder of Victorian gentility with manicured gardens, a splendid Band Stand offering weekly Summer Sunday afternoon concerts, a popular café and play area and activities including crazy golf, putting and tennis!

Bebra Gardens in Knaresborough is a surprising gem in a tucked-away spot.  Occupying a commanding position on the steep cliff above the river it offers great views across the Nidd Gorge and a lovely paddling pool for little feet in the summer.

The 18th century saw a growth in large scale landscaping and around Ripon and Masham, the Aislabie family left their mark with two remarkable sites.   Hackfall Wood near Masham is a treasure trove of grottoes, follies, surprise views and a fountain in a naturalized setting.  Hackfall is only surpassed by the World Heritage Site of the Studley Royal Water Gardens which sit on the banks of the River Skell, and in the shadow of Fountains Abbey – one of the largest and best preserved Cistercian monasteries in the UK.

Stately Homes and their floral gardens say much about an area.  Newby Hall, near Ripon, and Beningbrough Hall between Knaresborough and York are both fine examples of Yorkshire’s heritage, and are connected by their shared waterway.

Newby Hall makes for a great family day out, offering something for everyone, from the interior styling of Robert Adam and Thomas Chippendale, and the longest herbaceous border in Europe to a childrens’ adventure playground and a wonderful miniature railway running along the banks for the River Ure.

Beningbrough Hall is a romantic, Italian inspired mansion owned by the National Trust.  The Hall houses an extensive National Portrait Gallery collection and there is much to see in the ground.  Enjoy woodland, riverside and herbaceous border walks along with a natural play area where the kids can work off all their energy or take a look at the fascinating, working walled garden which supplies the café.

For those with a bit more energy – lace up your walking boots and enjoy the AONB walk around Pateley Bridge to find the lost Victorian gardens of the town.  A route guide is available from the Tourist Information Centre.

The gardens of Harrogate & District are always in bloom in one way or another, and offer something for everyone all year round.
