How Stean Gorge – a natural wonder - is the perfect place for camping and exploring the Yorkshire Dales. Our 3 star informal campsite is set beside the Gorge with How Stean Beck rippling through it. It’s set in tranquil rolling hills with majestic views of Nidderdale. There is plenty of space in the campsite for playing games on the grassy slopes and having fun. At night, the moon and stars are your only light so please bring a torch!
With 22 tent pitches, How Stean Gorge is a great place to meet up and spend quality time with family and friends too. You can find breath-taking scenery and plenty of exciting outdoor adventure activities led by our own professional instructors such as abseiling, gorge walking, via ferrata – high wire adventure course, caving and canoeing.
Wildlife watching, heritage and culture, fabulous food and shopping all a stone’s throw away. Please note: We do not have any electrical hook ups on this camping site because it’s a Site of Special Scientific Interest, however there is a large honesty fridge in the washing up area.
CAMPFIRES AND BBQ’S
Nothing is more relaxing than camping by a fire in the dark of the night. Fire pits are available at no extra cost around the site and you are welcome to have fires outside your tent – bring your own wood or purchase some at the shop on site.
HOT SHOWERS & OTHER ON SITE FACILITIES
We have a shower and toilet block housing 5 hot, family sized showers, 5 toilets and 3 wash basins in both the male and female areas. There is also a washing up area with 3 large deep sinks to wash up in. We do not have any electric points for hairdryers however there are two free hairdryers in both the ladies and the men’s toilets.
Fresh, homemade Yorkshire fare is served within the café. You can choose from an array of hot meals including an all day breakfast, lasagne, scampi, omelette or sausage, bacon, egg and chips. We also have a choice a lighter snacks including jacket potatoes, baguettes, bacon butties or home made soup. After a meal try one of our delicious desserts. Our home made Pavlova has been a firm favourite for nearly 40 years now or try How Stean Gorge Ice Cream, made only ½ mile away in Lofthouse. You can even see the cows that make it from the car park. Flavours include chocolate, vanilla and fruits of the forest.
We also have a selection of irresistible home made cakes including ‘the Jap’ which has also been a firm favourite with customers for nearly 40 years! The summer opening hours for the café are 10am – 6pm. Last orders for food are taken at 5pm however, we can take group bookings for 10 + people for early evening meals if booked in advance.
HOW STEAN GORGE – A NATURAL WONDER - 50% off admission price
All campers on our site get 50% off admission to this Visit England Quality Assured Attraction. Explore the Gorge trails and it’s fascinating caves and you can go down as often as you like during your stay. Parts of the Gorge are floodlit at night. Don’t forget to bring your wellies!
SUN TERRACE / CHILDREN’S CLIMBING FRAME
On sunny days you can eat and drink by the children’s play area which is directly adjacent the cafe making it an ideal location to have that well deserved treat whilst being able to watch the children play.
SHOP AND POST OFFICE
You can pre-order bread, eggs, bacon, sausage or milk from the shop. We also sell toys, souvenirs, maps, books as well as sweets, chocolate, ice cream and ice lollies. How Stean Gorge has it’s own Post Office where you can withdrawn cash, buy stamps, stationary and gift vouchers or pick up some euros.
Free WiFi is available in the restaurant and on the sun terrace.
As you can appreciate in this stunning but remote location, mobile phone signals are rare if not impossible. However, we have a payphone on site.
TENT HIRE – We’ll even put them up for you!
If you haven’t got a tent but you would love to experience the freedom of camping, we can help! We have a number of 8-berth troop tents available for hire – 100% waterproof. These tents do not have separate compartments for sleeping there is just one large open space. The hire cost is £30 per tent per night. Please note: you will be required to pay the usual camping fees per person per night as well as the tent hire.
On site, directly above the facilities building, we have a bunk area to sleep 22 or hire for meetings or away days. This roof space area is very basic with only camping mats provided. Please bring your own sleeping bags/pillows/camp beds.
THE BUNK BARN
Nearby at Scar House Reservoir we have the Bungalow (Bunkhouse 2) available, nestled in a remote hillside of Scar House Reservoir with fabulous unspoilt views across the Yorkshire Dales. This consists of two furnished rooms with continental bunks and will house 24 people. It has a small kitchen and cosy lounge. The toilets are located in a separate building adjacent to the accommodation. These toilets are open to the public and are owned by Yorkshire Water. Hot, family sized shower facilities are available at How Stean Gorge 4 miles away. This accommodation is in a beautiful quiet location at the head of Nidderdale.
APPRECIATING YOUR FELLOW CAMPERS
If you want to bring music to play out in the open please book with another campsite to avoid disappointment as no music is to be played on this site unless using headphones or similar due to campers in the past consistently pushing the limits of when to be quiet. We have learned over the years that this has caused more issues than anything else – just enjoy the sounds of the wildlife and people having fun.
We welcome group bookings space permitting. However please read our campsite rules before booking. We do not tolerate rowdy behaviour for the good of all fellow campers.
This year, we have reduced the number of camping pitches available to allow our campers to have more space to enjoy this special location and improve your holiday experience.
|Opening (1 Feb 2019 - 30 Nov 2019)|
* During the summer school holidays the café is open for breakfast from 9am on Saturdays and Sundays.
