A weekend of Gardens in and around Ripon

A weekend exploring gardens, what could be better? We are blessed with a unique range of gardens in the Harrogate District and many are just a short journey from the centre of the wonderful cathedral city of Ripon. There’s so much to see and do at the gardens in and around Ripon so prepare yourself for a busy weekend!

A Sculpture Garden

Your first stop should be the Himalayan Gardens and Sculpture Park at Grewelthorpe.  Many will say they have heard of it, but never actually been!

Located in the beautiful countryside between Masham and Ripon, the Himalayan Garden and Sculpture Park is a botanical masterpiece, set in stunning woodland enhanced by peaceful springs, lakes and over 80 contemporary sculptures. For the first time this year they will be open all summer through until the end of October.

Your next stop must be the delightful Ripon Walled Garden, part of the Ripon Community Link Charity working with adults and young people with learning disabilities. Explore the plant nursery, orchard, woodland and enjoy a take-away snack or drink from the shop. With a small enclosed play area and the woodland bird hide and willow room, it is a wonderful place to relax. They are open all year round so make sure it’s on your list of gardens to visit and you will discover one of Ripon’s hidden gems and help to support the valuable work of their charity.

A 20th Century Garden

No weekend in Ripon would be complete without a visit to Newby Hall Gardens one of the most important and beautiful 20th century gardens in the country and certainly the North’s finest. It boasts 14 ‘rooms’ within the main, formal garden including and early 20th century rock garden, serene white garden, traditional rose garden, water garden and even a hot, tropical garden. The famous 172 metre long border, packed with around 6500 plants is at the heart of the garden and Newby’s most well-loved vista.

A Water Garden

Not to be missed is Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal just 3 miles south of Ripon. This stunning World Heritage Site is home to some of the most complete abbey ruins in the country and a sweeping Water Garden. At first the garden seems a natural space but it was engineers by its Georgian designers to create angles, edges and startling views. With follies and white statues it’s all about the big reveals – catching a glimpse of the Temple of Piety from across the river or climbing up the High Ride and turning the corner to Surprise View, where the abbey ruins stand proud in the valley.
