An exhibition to celebrate at the Mercer Gallery

Celebration is the current exhibition on show at the Mercer Art Gallery in Harrogate and it is just that – a celebration! A celebration of British abstract artists, a celebration of colour, shapes and textures.

The exhibition showcases works by Douglas Abercrombie. Gillian Ayres, Francis Davison, John Edwards, Patrick Heron, John Hoyland, Albert Irvin, Patrick Jones, John McLean, Mali Morris, Fred Pollock and Gary Wragg. The earliest works date from the 1970s and the latest from the early 2000s.

Mercer celebration whole gallery

The works are all from one private collection that has not be exhibited in public before, so this is your only chance to immerse yourself in this colourful collection amongst the opulent surroundings of the Mercer Art Gallery.

Each painting offers a different perspective amidst a riot of colour. A small painting that requires a closer look or a large painting that dominates the room. On entering the gallery your eyes are drawn to the artwork that animate the walls.

Mercer celebration slow looking

Make your way around the north and main gallery and try slow looking - choose an artwork, select a slow looking card, take a seat and take it all in. Did you know the average time spent looking at an artwork is about eight seconds? What might you discover if you took the time to really see a painting?

Accompanying the exhibition is a short film running in the main gallery offering visitors insights into the artists’ thinking, and suggesting ways of how to engage with abstract art.

All of the recent works exhibited in the smaller north gallery are for sale giving visitors the opportunity to purchase a unique gift. After you have visited the exhibition, browse the gallery shop to find that perfect gift for yourself or a loved one. Perhaps a limited edition print or an original artwork or pick up some beautiful cards and artist catalogues. A visit to the Mercer Art Gallery is a perfect part of your visit to the Harrogate district.

Celebration runs until Sunday 4th September.  The Mercer Art Gallery is open Tuesdays to Sundays 10am to 4pm
