District of illuminations

At this time of year in the Harrogate District there is a growing anticipation of the festive season and as the evenings grow darker a host of illuminations light up the evenings from the famous tree lights on the Stray in Harrogate to the Christmas decorations above the high streets and some stunning events.

Fountains

Fountains Abbey is beautifully lit every evening in rainbow colours giving you the opportunity to discover a favourite destination in a whole new light with atmospheric music in keeping with its history. Visitors are encouraged to bring torches to help them find their way safely along the paths in the darkness and in doing so they become twinkling features in the landscape. From 2-3pm on certain dates live choirs and bands perform. The Carols and Candlelight services in December held in the cellarium are always a truly memorable experience that need to be booked ahead. The Season of Music and Lights is from 20th November to 2nd January.

Stockeld

The Christmas Adventure at Stockeld Park is one of the largest illuminated displays in the country and families go on an adventure through The Enchanted Forest where they discover twinkling scenes and magical characters around every corner. The Winter Illuminations are open from 20th November to 4th January. Stockeld Park is also home to the only illuminated maze in Yorkshire in the form of a huge twinkling snowflake, plus an ice rink, outdoor play, zip wires and much more fun.

RHS Glow

RHS Harlow Carr transforms in November and December evenings to showcase the garden as the spectacular light show, Glow. Trees, shrubs and sculptures are highlighted in dazzling colours which are reflected in the lake giving a dramatic look to the trail which has been extended this year to include more features. Glow is on from 18th November to 29th December. While you are there the gift shop and Bettys tea house are also open. Image credit: Charlotte Graham.

Town centre Christmas lights across the district will be turning on mid-November and an illuminated Ferris Wheel, Helter Skelter and Victorian Carousel will arrive in Harrogate to further brighten the town. Head to Harrogate town centre for a ride on the big wheel and take in a great view of the town’s illuminations including the Christmas Fayre from 3rd to 12th December.
