50 Things to Welcome the World 10 Day Countdown

50 Things to Welcome the World 10 Day Countdown

During the final days in the run up to the UCI World Road Cycling Championships we look at more things to do around the Harrogate District.

10 Starling Independent Bar/Café, Harrogate

Starling is one of our many independent and welcoming eateries with a unique offering. Its relaxed atmosphere works equally well as a specialist coffee shop serving quality homemade food through the day and as a trendy bar with an enviable range of beers in the evenings. They stock local gin, Whittaker’s, and an impressive range of cocktails and whiskeys alongside homemade pizzas.

There is plenty more seating to be found if you venture upstairs and with the UCI racing guaranteed to be on the screens and daily events you don’t have to miss any of the action at this popular venue.

UCI Merchandise available from Harrogate Tourist Information Centre

Harrogate Tourist Information Centre ///photo.gears.free has a range of products to help you celebrate, support and remember your experience at the UCI Road World Championships.

In addition to official UCI merchandise there is a range of Harrogate Welcomes the World items and further cycling themed products and books including T-shirts, hats, cups, wristbands, key rings, scarves and stationery items.

The Tourist Information Centre is situated on the course route on Crescent Road, Harrogate, HG1 2WJ and the staff will also support you with any information you need during your stay.

The friendly team will also be out and about around the town and the UCI fanzone wearing distinctive navy coats as your definitive sources of information about the Harrogate district. Please feel free to approach them.

8 Free Walking Tours of Harrogate

Harrogate is fortunate enough to benefit from a free walking tour. These tours take over an hour and provide visitors with an entertaining and interesting introduction to the history and origins of the town. They usually take place Wednesdays – Sundays four times a day with occasional special events for example throughout the UCI week there are some bicycle themed evening tours. All tours set off from the War Memorial opposite Bettys Tea Room.

If you are interested in taking part, check the times advertised on an A board at the start point, no booking required, just be there when the tour sets off.

7 Nidderdale Greenway cycle route / Beryl Burton

The Nidderdale Greenway is a four mile long converted railway line that offers traffic-free, relatively flat cycling from Harrogate to Ripley and links with several other cycle routes allowing cyclists to explore routes to Knaresborough, Brimham Rocks, Fountains Abbey and beyond. It is popular with family groups and recreational cyclists.

The Beryl Burton Cycle Way is another off road tarmacked route which meets the Nidderdale Greenway. It runs from Conyngham Hall Park by the River Nidd in Knaresborough to the Bilton area of Harrogate. This picturesque route through the countryside allows a safe route between the two towns although be prepared for a few small climbs along the way. The route is named after Beryl Burton who was World Champion no less than seven times and rode for the Knaresborough Cycling Club.

UCI Themed indoor cycling at Go Revolution

Feeling inspired by all the talk of international cycling? But not equipped or inclined to venture out onto the roads? Why not head to Go Revolution indoor cycling studio and experience the virtual thrill of the Harrogate Circuit like a champion?

Bookings are available for solo riders, groups, training or fun to suit your ability and mood.

Mountain Bike Routes

If you prefer a more rugged style of two wheeled adventure, the Harrogate district offers some incredible places to venture out on your mountain bike. Whether you are looking to challenge yourself on the steepest (and sometimes muddiest) of routes, or if you just like to escape the traffic and head out into the countryside on a gentle route, you will be able to find it here.

We can even boast a manmade trail centre that is said to be the most technical in the country. When it comes to off road cycling around Harrogate there is something for everyone.

Newby Hall is one of England’s finest houses with award winning gardens and is currently in the running to be voted Historic Houses Garden of the Year 2019.

With 25 acres of gardens arranged in carefully designed themes and housing nationally important plant collections it is both a delight and an education to explore.

2 The Nidderdale Show

The Nidderdale Show on September 23 is a traditional Yorkshire event and a must for visitors to the region to experience. Agricultural shows bring rural communities together to celebrate the countryside way of life and traditions. With prize animals, show jumping, sheep dog trials, award winning food and drink and a fun fair it is a full day of entertainment. The Nidderdale Show is unaffected by the UCI championships and the No 24 Bus will be running as normal through the day, although some of the bus stops in Harrogate town centre may be temporarily moved - please check.
