Cycle Expo Yorkshire - Q&A with Guy Kesteven

Cycle Expo Yorkshire - Q&A with Guy Kesteven

We asked Guy Kesteven, Head of Bike for Cycle Expo Yorkshire, to tell us more about Cycle Expo 2019.

Why has the Cycle Expo Yorkshire moved to September this year?

We were invited to be the affiliate expo for the UCI Road World Championships for this year and who wouldn’t want to be part of the biggest bike party in Britain? Especially when its happening on our doorstep in Harrogate.

So how will that make this year’s Expo different?

The big change is that we are hosting the finish line for all the riders of the official UCI Road World Championships Sportive challenge on Sunday. Plus we’re expecting cycling fans all over the world to visit the expo as part of the opening Worlds weekend and we’ve got a free shuttle bus between the Expo and the Fan Zone.

Overall we’re still concentrating on what we do best though. That means we’re keeping all the interactive, fun focused events that mean everyone in the family will have a great time.

What else is new at the year’s show?

We’ve got some awesome new ambassadors - World Champions Steve Bate and Danny Hart - who’ll be joining our existing champions Lizzie Deignan, Jack Carthy, Neil Campbell and Ruby Isaacs. They’ll all be telling their inspiring stories in our Sofa Sessions interviews and Jack and Ruby will be doing their amazing trials and roller demos again.

As well as tons of fresh new exhibitors we’ve got a spectacular indoor velodrome activation with Evans Cycles with hot laps and team races for both adults and kids. Hope Technology are bringing their fantastic Academy kids bike try out and skills area as well as displaying their latest world class, Lancashire made bikes and products. BMX star Matti Hemmings is running a jaw dropping jump display on Sunday as well as the National BMX Flatland competition on Saturday.

Among the exhibitors Spatzwear, Kendal Mint Co, Hunt wheels, Vielo and others are also launching whole new ranges or showcasing their latest additions at the show. Wheelbase, Cycology, Gore Bike Wear, Giordana and Assos will all be at the show offering amazing clothing deals, competitions and giveaways to get you ready for winter cycling.

What bit of the Expo are you looking forward to most?

Personally I love having the chance to chat to some utterly inspiring people from World Champions in all bike disciplines like Judy from Breeze who leads beginners rides for British Cycling at over 80 years old. I don’t think I’ll get anywhere on the leader board of the street velodrome after I’ve done a live V02 Max test with the coaches at Vitfor but I reckon I’ll be in with a shout at the ‘slowest bike ride’ competition!

Seriously though, it’s just great to see thousands of keen cyclists of all ages have a great day out and hopefully go home even more enthusiastic about getting out on their bikes.

What’s your tip visitors on what not to miss?

There’s so much going from interviews to displays and have a go hero velodrome sessions the best idea is to download the show app and get the full timetable from there. Tickets are valid all weekend so my tip is to turn up both days to make sure you don’t miss anything at Cycle Expo Yorkshire 2019.
