Love and Pancakes

Love and Pancakes

February is the month of some of our favourite celebrations and events, and the time when many of our attractions open their doors to welcome visitors for the first time in 2020. Snowdrops are blooming, love is in the air and children are looking forward to a week’s holiday.

Harrogate’s beautiful Edwardian theatre, the Royal Hall, which is the only surviving Kursaal in mainland UK holds three open days per year and two are in February this year. You are welcome to join a free tour at 11am or 2pm on 12th February, 26th February or 11th March to hear about the history and restoration of this stunning building.

Valentine’s Day, of course, falls on the 14th February every year and the restaurants throughout the area have created menus to treat you and the special someone in your life. Most of these specialities are available for a number of days and are accompanied by special offers. Thai restaurant Sukhothai and the French Bistrot Pierre have special menus created by their chefs for this romantic occasion. If you prefer a night out with friends you can still take advantage of a great deal with the Mates or Dates offer at Latin American themed Las Iguanas.

Possibly our favourite date in February is Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day, which this year falls on Tuesday 25th.  As well as families enjoying making and eating the flat treats together in kitchens around the county there is another ancient tradition of pancake racing involving participants often in teams and sometimes in fancy dress racing along a course attempting to toss their pancakes without dropping or damaging them as they go. Come and watch this much loved tradition in Ripon this year. Races start on the Cathedral forecourt when the Lent bell rings at 11am.

Most schools are on half term holidays from February 17th to 21st this year and families are well provided for with places to go and things to do from a fun packed day of adventure at Stockeld Park to making bird boxes at Brimham Rocks.
