GARDENERS FOR NATURE - TIPS FOR SUMMER

Toad 6316816 1280

Keep slugs at bay and provide food for thrushes and blackbirds by opening old compost bags and spreading on the grass overnight. In the morning turn them over to expose sheltering slugs, birds will soon learn to collect this abundance of food.

Greenhouses are warm humid places that toads and frogs love and they will often find a way in when the door is open. Keep greenhouses ventilated and on hot, sunny days, water the floor to keep the air moist, benefitting both your plants and any resident amphibians.

At this peak time for pollinating insects such as honeybees, hoverflies, bumblebees and butterflies, take time out to watch the intense and methodical activity of these incredible foragers up close.
