Something amazing is happing at Ripon Cathedral this summer
Thousands of beautiful, white, paper angels are being created and displayed in hope and in memory of loved ones and heroes. The final dramatic installation should be open for public viewing during August and September.
In March When the lockdown happened at Ripon Cathedral, many of the cathedral staff were furloughed but the development team were tasked with creating a new project that not only supported the community during the Covid-19 pandemic but also offered a visitor attraction once the lockdown was over. After much design and preparation ‘A Wing and a Prayer’ was launched in partnership with the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

The aims of the project are to create an installation of origami angels that fill the nave of Ripon Cathedral with angels and at the same time giving an opportunity for the community to send in prayers to remember those who have lost their lives to the coronavirus and also to pray for those in the NHS and other front line services, who are risking their own lives, for the sake of others.

The YAA and the cathedral put an appeal out for volunteers to come forward and within four weeks 11,000 origami angels have been created by volunteers from three years old to ninety years old and who live all over the Yorkshire region. The origami angels will form a magnificent display that will reflect how people from the regional community have come together during these uncertain times to support one another.

The Dean of Ripon, the Very Rev John Dobson DL said: “We have been overwhelmed with the continuous generosity from our community and are excited to reveal our installation which will be open during August and September for visitors to come and marvel at. “Our goal is to fill Ripon Cathedral with angels and prayers that offer a spectacular attraction for our community and tourists to visit and reflect upon”.
