Summer holidays in the Harrogate district

From an Ed Sheeran tribute to Welly Wanging, there’s plenty of family fun-in-the-sun this summer across the Harrogate district

If you’re thinking about what to do during the school summer holidays, we have lots of ideas for some serious family fun. You’ll have an amazing UK staycation and family summer holiday in the Harrogate district, with lots of exciting things to do, family-friendly places to visit and some of the best days out in North Yorkshire. 

Here are some of our favourite summer holiday events, activities and days out that you can enjoy.

Stockeld Rox, at Stockeld Park

A family friendly music tribute festival taking place on 19 and 20 August, Stockeld Rox features an incredible line up from ABBA Stars to Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, Meat Loaf, Ed Sheeran and more that will have all ages singing and dancing along. Ticket holders have access to Stockeld Park from 3:30pm. The concert starts at 6:30pm and ends with a spectacular firework finale.

New for 2022 at Stockeld Park: The Playhive, one of Europe’s biggest indoor children’s play centres.

Featuring a series of interconnected adventure zones set within a circular building, with a 33-foot tower at its centre, the Playhive brings the adventure and exploration of the natural world indoors, with unique play experiences themed on space, the jungle, the ocean, and the air.

The Playhive adds to the fun at the North Yorkshire family attraction where the Enchanted Forest, Teepee Encampment, Tangle Tree Climb, Woodsands Cove and Spider’s Lair offer imaginative bespoke play features designed to inspire children’s imaginations.

Visit a beautiful garden to enjoy fresh air and open space

Head to the Himalayan Garden and Sculpture Park near Masham and you can explore their 45 acres of open space, spotting the stunning sculptures along the way. Let the kids loose on the Woodland Playground whilst you enjoy a rest in the Garden Tearoom and take in the glorious surroundings of this special garden space.

Escape fields 2

Studfold Fairy and Pixie Adventure

The Studfold Fairies have flown into Upper Nidderdale! Families follow a unique trail of magical tiny fairy houses that each have a fun story or pixie poem. Suitable for boys and girls from preschool to primary, kids can enjoy go-karts, den building, sand pit, ride-on tractors and a lovely picnic and play area. Picnics can be ordered on arrival and taken to the play area on the trail. Children are invited to join in the fun by dressing up in fairy wings, a great day out for little legs and big imaginations.

New for 2022 at Studfold Adventure Trail: You’ve heard of escape rooms… but what about escape fields?! This year, some pesky pixies have locked a number of magical gateways...

Find the lock codes to travel through the wonderful Dales countryside, discover clues to find treasure, make wishes, explore the amazing world of nature and have lots of interactive fun.

Magical Woodland Adventure at Mother Shipton’s Cave

Little ones are encouraged to dress in something sparkly, or even their fairy wings or elf hats to explore the enchanted woodland scenes of fairy houses, giant toadstools and magical curiosities along the banks of the River Nidd this summer.

Spend the day at our stunning National Trust sites

If your idea of an amazing day out is exploring beautiful and historical buildings, stunning natural landscapes and manicured gardens, you’ll be delighted to hear that the Harrogate district has three completely different but equally impressive National Trust properties for families to enjoy.

Fountains autumn 2

This summer Beningbrough Gardens and adventure playground offers space to run, play and explore around the Italian-inspired hall and formal gardens. The breathtaking views, excitingly dark Serpentine Tunnel and impressive deer herds make Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden a family favourite. 

For a little out of town adventure head to the fascinating natural formations at Brimham Rocks for hiking, hide and seek and some climbing if you dare…

Head to an agricultural show

The Harrogate district is blessed with fabulous countryside and traditional North Yorkshire farms so while you’re here, don’t miss the opportunity to go to a traditional agricultural show and soak up the culture of our rural communities. With show jumping, animal judging, exhibitions, music, and food stalls there is always plenty to keep children entertained at an agricultural show.

Nidderdale Show

This summer the Birstwith Show takes place on 30th July and highlights for children from previous years have included dog agility classes, children’s races, mini ponies, Welly Wanging and Egg Chucking. 

Ripley Show in the grounds of the stunning Ripley Castle will be held on 14th August and includes vintage tractors as a highlight.

Looking out over Druids Temple Swinton Estate

Get back to nature at beautiful Swinton

Dying to ditch the digital entertainment devices and get the kids away from their screens? Try the Woodland School at Swinton Bivouac where children can get close to nature and explore the outdoors through themed activities.

Alternatively, take a walk through the woods and discover the Druid’s Temple or book a couple of nights in a yurt and enjoy the pleasures of eco-friendly living - all in the rolling landscape of the Swinton Estate.
