Enquiring minds are welcome at Beningbrough Hall, Gallery and Gardens where children are invited to become undercover discoverers on a free nature trail around the snowdrop adorned estate. Although The Hall and galleries are undergoing essential conservation work at the moment, the restaurant and play areas are open every day of half term, ready for you and the family to explore. Why not incorporate the beautiful Beningbrough River Walk, if you’re in the vicinity? This 3.5-mile walk includes riverbank, woodland and fields - great for families and dog walking.

Fountains snowdrops

It is also snow drop season at Fountains Abbey and you are invited to plant your own snow drop to take home from 11am – 1pm on 19th, 21st, and 23rd February and the weekend of 26th and 27th February. The abbey, water gardens and deer park are open, and the restaurant, tea-room and Mill refreshment kiosk have reopened. Booking is strongly advised via the website. Little ones can enjoy the children’s play area, which is full of fun things to climb on and over – including a miniature wooden abbey. To enjoy the beautiful and rustic side of the estate, follow the Seven Bridges walk starting at the outfall of the lake. There are only five bridges remaining, so don’t carry on looking once you’ve spotted them!

Fountains
Harlow

Discover the mysteries of the earth underneath your feet with a packed programme of family-friendly events at RHS Garden Harlow Carr this February half term. From mind-boggling creatures and tree roots that talk, to the importance of soil for plants, minibeasts and the planet, join the paperless trail to explore the beautiful garden and exciting things beneath your feet. For delicious treats, Bettys teashop is open for eat-in and takeaway food, and if there’s some fuel left in your feet, why not try the walk to Valley Gardens?

Knaresborough Boats

At Knaresborough Castle grounds, you can enjoy one of the most iconic views in the county. The castle and museum are open Wednesdays and Saturdays, with the grounds freely open every day. Following the visit, make your way down the steps to enjoy a delicious ice-cream or afternoon tea at a riverside café. The round walking route around the town takes in the quiet lanes and river-side paths as it circles its way around the town.

Druids

If you’ve a need for speed, why not hire a mountain bike and explore 8 km of trails in the Druids Woodland, of Swinton Estate. The Bistro Café serves up delicious snacks and refreshments to set you up for the day. For longer stays, enjoy a spot of glamping in the barn, Yurts or Tree lodges. For a gentler pace, take a walk to the Druids Temple at Masham.

Stump child

For a completely different adventure, why not head underground into the mysterious world of Stump Cross Caverns. Explore the natural wonders of this delightful Yorkshire Dales show cave via lit pathways and designated walkways for you to follow. The Time Café has stunning views of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and as an extra special treat there is a mini-disco on Tuesday 22nd February, featuring sing-along and games themed to the popular film Frozen. When you are ready to be back out in the fresh air again the Pateley Bridge heritage trail is the perfect opportunity for a delightful walk through the picturesque town. Follow the trail to discover the town’s fascinating history and stop-off at the Oldest Sweet Shop in the World, guaranteed to keep the little ones enthralled too!
