Ripon Cathedral
Ripon Cathedral has a history stretching back almost 14 centuries as a place of worship and pilgrimage. Everyone is welcome to come and explore this amazing building and entrance is free.
The cathedral has offered an unbroken tradition of witness to the Christian faith, both in the City of Ripon and across North Yorkshire as well acting as an iconic centre of the city itself.
The first stone church was founded by St Wilfrid and dedicated in 672. The crypt remains from this time and is a highlight of any visit.
Not to be missed are the medieval choir stalls which inspired Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland. You can also follow in the footsteps of Wilfred Owen, the war poet as he recuperated here during WW1 and wrote many of his famous poems, before returning to the front to die.
Ripon Cathedral has a strong musical tradition with a wonderful choir, who sing six services each week as well as several special events throughout the year.
The cathedral holds several services a day and a series of musical concerts - open to all who may be interested.
Ripon Cathedral is open to visitors every day from 8:30am to 6pm, Sundays from 12 noon with visitors welcome to explore this breath-taking building.
There is also a shop selling souvenirs, CDs, books and a range of other products and gifts, with all proceeds going to support the cathedral.
There’s a range of leaflets to help you explore the history and meaning of Ripon Cathedral or follow a pilgrimage to discover something more.
Whether you are coming to enjoy some special music, explore the ancient crypt, light a candle or simply to enjoy the atmosphere of this holy building, you are most welcome.
Guides and Welcomers are on duty in the cathedral daily between 10am and 4.30pm and pride themselves on giving a warm Yorkshire welcome and answering any questions that you may have.
