About the Market Place

Ripon’s Market square has formed the centre of the city since the 13th Century when it was laid out by the Archbishop of York in 1215 AD. Facing the market square is the Town Hall, a grade II listed building built in 1719 with a striking presence that houses the Ripon Tourist Information Centre where you can find all the information you need for your visit.

In the centre of the square is the Obelisk which is even older, over 300 years old having been constructed in 1702.

It is also around the Obelisk that Ripon’s most curious tradition takes place.  For over 800 years the Ripon Hornblower has ‘set the watch’ in the market square.  The ‘watch’ is set by the hornblower sounding the ceremonial horn at each corner of the Obelisk every night at 9pm.

The nightly act has now become a popular attraction, and the Hornblowers have become experts on the history of their office and of Ripon itself, entertaining and informing the visitors who assemble in the market place on an evening to observe.
