The Piano Quartet in A minor by Gustav Mahler is the first movement to an abandoned piano quartet and the composer’s sole surviving piece of instrumental chamber music. Described by Mozart to his father as a “concerto of a peculiar kind”, his K449 piano concerto is here performed in the version for string quartet. Dvořák’s Piano Quintet No. 2 is full of expressive lyricism, with characteristic song and dance elements from Czech folk music.
