Harrogate Welcomes the World Carnival

On Saturday 27 July Harrogate Welcomes the World with the Carnival – a true party in the park with experiences and fun to explore for all the family.

The Carnival celebrations kick off with an opening parade featuring ensembles, music, and dance from around the world including street theatre and some of our local performers too. An explosion of colour and sound through the town.

The Carnival will play host to a variety of musicians, and performance art and activities including dance and craft workshops, storytelling, rides, walkabout street theatre and more will be taking part across the carnival site.  

Parade

The Day starts with a colourful parade taking a tour of Harrogate town centre.  Featuring lively performance art, world music and dance, street theatre, local performers and larger than life puppetry – the Parade kick starts Carnival with a colourful celebration setting the tone for a wonderful day. 

The parade begins on Cambridge Road by the cenotaph before a tour of Harrogate passing the Harrogate Theatre, The Victoria Shopping Centre and Bettys Tea Rooms before making its way to the Valley Gardens to get the Carnival truly started.

Global Music Stage

Local legend DJ Trev will kick things off at the Music stage from 11, before the music goes global featuring sounds from around the world, and including genre mashers Mr Wilsons Second Liners, Dennis Rollins Funky Funk,  Buena Vista Social Club tribute act Sambroso Sambroso and Leeds Jazz masters Tates de Pois fusing afrobeat and hip hop.

Global Dance Stage

A dynamic global tour of dancing styles offering the opportunity to learn a few moves, from belly dancing, Indian dance performances and Egyptian Tanoura dancers.  This mixture of performances and workshops takes place throughout the carnival.

Theatre of Food

This eclectic food stage features local chefs and cooks with a global outlook and heritage, sharing ideas and tips for great food and cooking fantastic dishes for you to try.  The line-up includes Pawel Cekala from the West Park Hotel in the centre of Harrogate, Kevin Fernandez from Rafi’s Spice Box, Tocin Dayo-Oyekole from OSO Sauces, Kenneth Poon from the ever popular Orchid Restaurant and Mehdi Moykemach from Fodder, at the Yorkshire Event Centre.

So much More...

As well as the Theatre of Food there will also be a magnificent food zone, offering your taste buds a tour of the culinary world.  Food from Greece to Mexico, Italy to Lebanon will be available to try.

Family activities will be taking place across the Carnival including crafts workshops, storytelling, face painting and art activities.

There are also structured workshops taking place in the days before Carnival, and all day at the Carnival itself, including Urban Art, West Indian Carnival, Drum Dance and belly dancing as well as woodland crafts.  For more info on the workshops, click here.
