This exhibition fills the gallery with colour in a stunning and energising experience of painting at its most elemental. It brings together superb examples of British abstract painting from one outstanding private collection, with supporting works from the Harrogate Fine Art Collection and loans direct from the artists or their estates.

Celebration will feature work from Douglas Abercrombie. Gillian Ayres, Francis Davison, John Edwards, Patrick Heron, John Hoyland, Albert Irvin, Patrick Jones, John McLean, Mali Morris, Fred Pollock, Gary Wragg.

The twelve selected artists are not a school or movement, they have very different approaches to making abstract painting. But they are united by the collector’s eye for bold, gestural abstract work, often large scale, in vibrant colour. The earliest works date from 1970s and the latest from the early 2000s.

Visitors are invited to try Slow Looking in the gallery: choose an artwork, select a slow looking card and allow yourself time to make your own connections.

This exhibition has been made possible thanks to the generous support of The Friends of the Mercer Gallery.

“These paintings are positive, affirmative statements in light, space and colour, and the materiality of paint and canvas. Far from being ‘pictures of nothing’, each offers a world for us to explore… Some images will assert their presence across a room, others will work their magic in close quarters. All will open up as time is spent with them…The trick is to open your eyes as much as possible: and perhaps the purpose of abstract art is exactly this, to allow your eyes to open.” Sam Cornish
