Women Elite Road Race: In a route that features the final half of the sensational 2017 Women’s Tour de Yorkshire race the Women’s Elite race includes two big Yorkshire climbs, constantly rolling landscape and some of the best cycling roads in the world.
The women’s race begins in the city of Bradford, historically a centre of industry for Yorkshire, but currently enjoying a rebirth as a cultural hub with a vibrant city centre.
The route heads North through Shipley and Otley, the capital of Yorkshire cycling and home of past World Champion, Lizzie Deignan. They then tackle the first climb, Norwood Edge, the steep drag that rises from Linley Wood Reservoir and traces the outline of the Stainburn Forest Mountain Bike tracks.
From there the race crosses the A59 and drops into Nidderdale, where it joins the route of the 2017 Tour de Yorkshire Women’s race, passing through Pateley Bridge and then hitting the decisive Climb at Lofthouse where Deignan famously attacked and left the peloton behind.
From the top of the Lofthouse climb (known locally as Trapping Hill), the road sweeps down through Colsterdale past farms and villages and brings the race into Masham, and then on to the city of Ripon. Leaving Ripon the race will pass by the UNESCO World Heritage site of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, before winding along country roads that lead to the long fast straight that brings the racers into Harrogate.
Unlike 2017, the first rider into Harrogate will have to make sure they have plenty left in the tank, there will be three laps of Harrogate’s gruelling finishing loop before the leader crosses the finish line for the final time, and claims the Rainbow Jersey and title of World Champion
