Harrogate BID have partnered with The Jorvik Group to covert an empty shop unit and bring Windows On The Past: Health and Healing in Medieval England, a pop-up, immersive installation to Harrogate Town Centre. The display includes archaeological finds, replica objects and scenic elements - giving passers-by a view to the past. With a physician’s uroscopy wheel, an apothecary’s table and the barber surgeon’s tool chest, you can discover the methods practiced in medieval times. The pop-up display also considers elements of medieval life in Harrogate, such as where they may have gone to seek medical help and whether people were aware of the benefits of clean water even before Harrogate's springs were discovered. The display will allow people to compare and contrast the health practices of the Medieval period to those in today’s society Visitors can explore a wealth of information online and consider the display's themes in more detail. Reconstructions, videos and an exclusive short film, written by Terry Deary – author of the Horrible Histories series – entitled A Touch of Plague, can all be accessed via QR codes. Online viewers can also learn more about disease and illness through a facial reconstruction of a skeleton found in York, showing signs of leprosy, helping the public understand how this individual may have looked as the disease developed. Extra information about medieval Harrogate and the artefacts on display can also be accessed online - plus find out if your medieval cure would have worked in our fun interactive activity. The pop-up installation is situated on the Ground Floor of the Victoria Shopping Centre and is in place until Monday 2nd May.
