What's On Around Ripon

Ripon has a buzzing community and cultural scene that yields some unique and imaginative events.

Whatever time of year you plan to visit there are events in and around the city to inspire, excite and educate.

Are you planning an event in Ripon? Tell us about it Here.

The city’s vibrant community and extraordinary cultural heritage has inspired a rich programme of events throughout the year that will appeal to everyone.

Ripon Cathedral forms the backdrop to many events that bring together the community and its visitors to celebrate more than 1000 years of culture in the city – from the nightly 'Setting of the Watch' by the Hornblower, to the annual St Wilfrid’s Procession in July that celebrates the city’s patron saint.

Christmas is a very special time at the Cathedral with a full programme of cultural and choral occasions which are perfect for experiencing the wonder of the season.

The Annual Pancake Races see cassocked clerics and locals alike racing down Kirkgate each Shrove Tuesday, frying pan in hand.   The warmer spring months mark the start of the season at Ripon Racecourse with its full schedule of racing (as well as many non-race day events for all the family).

This historic city has several visitor attractions, large and small either in the centre or close by – all of which host their own full programme of events.

The World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal offer visitors of all ages the opportunity to experience culture, history and the natural world.  The Ripon Museums give insight into the hardships of life gone by and Lightwater Valley Theme Park offers special events for thrill seekers in addition to its normal opening times.

Newby Hall is a popular venue for festivals, fairs and exhibitions.

Autumn welcomes the Ripon International Festival which attracts visitors from far and wide to deliver an eclectic range of music and culture to its delighted audience.

And let’s not forget Market Day– stallholders cluster around the obelisk in the Market Square every Thursday come rain or shine – attracting bargain hunters as it has done for centuries!

Whatever the month, whatever the day – you will be amazed what’s on in Ripon to keep you and your family entertained.
