Today is the first ever Global Gilbert & Sullivan Day

3rd May 2014

Categories: News

From here on in Global Gilbert and Sullivan Day will be held annually on or near the birthday of Richard D’Oyly Carte who introduced the dramatist and composer in 1875. Carte’s birthday was May 3rd which, coincidentally, in 2014 falls on a Saturday.

Global Gilbert and Sullivan Day will kick-start a whole season of celebrations, sing-alongs and shows dedicated to the duo, and this year’s international Gilbert & Sullivan festival will be held here in Harrogate and surrounding venues in the district between the 2nd – 26th August 2014.

The Royal Hall, Harrogate Theatre, Valley Gardens and the Crown Hotel in Harrogate as well as Knaresborough Castle, Fountains Abbey, Newby Hall and Ripon Cathedral will be amongst the venues to host a spectacular range of events.

The Harrogate International Centre in the town centre will also be transformed on a Gilbert & Sullivan theme into the ‘Utopia Pavilion’ which will be open daily for lunches, high teas and suppers as well as free lunchtime concerts and entertainments such as ensemble singing, 2 or 4 hands at the piano and other novel attractions.

The impressive programme is available now on their website and includes a varied range of productions, shows, operettas, concerts, outdoor performances, singing opportunities, exhibitions and memorabilia fairs, sight-seeing tours, plus a 3-day Gilbert extravaganza, a 3-day Sullivan extravaganza, special events with much in-demand performer Richard Stuart and a festival chase at Ripon races.

There’s also a chance to be part of a unique World Record bid to perform all 13 Gilbert & Sullivan operas non-stop in under 28 hours on a whirlwind tour around some of North Yorkshire’s most colourful and famous landmarks. Anyone can take part, you just need to register and you can sing as much or as little as you like! The world record attempt will begin on Friday 15th August and you can find registration details on their website.

Tickets for G&S Festival events are on sale now and you can find out more on the Gilbert & Sullivan festival website.
