Thinking that great culture is only found in the big cities?  Think again!  There’s a rich seam of events and experiences for the senses just waiting to be tapped in Harrogate and District.
Here are some 10 great cultural experiences to stimulate your senses!

Harrogate International Festivals

Harrogate International Festivals has grown since its birth in 1966 to become a major player on the world’s stage of cultural events – offering a year round programme which ranges from music, the performing arts and literature to salons with an eclectic range of speakers.  Children are seen and definitely heard with their own festival whilst outreach events aim to bring experience to as wide an audience as possible. 

Turner in Yorkshire

JMW Turner - widely considered one of Great Britain’s finest Romantic landscape painters - drew great inspiration from his trips to Yorkshire and his resulting work provides wonderful insight both into his skill and also the landscape of 200 years ago.  Turner’s sketchbooks and finished works record visits to Boroughbridge, Masham, Ripon, and Knaresborough and depict such landmarks as Fountains Abbey, Hackfall Woods, Plumpton Rocks and Knaresborough Castle.

Coldstones Cut in Nidderdale

Culture on a grand scale!  Yorkshire’s biggest and highest public artwork – a walk through this  ambitious stone sculpture rewards the visitor with panoramic views of Nidderdale, the Yorkshire Dales and beyond!

Harrogate’s Mercer Gallery

Housed in the former Promenade Room – the free to enter Mercer Gallery offers a constantly changing selection of the town’s important art collection,  profiling artists from the 19th  and 20th century as well as a vibrant programme of touring exhibitions.

Northern Aldborough Festival

Now established for over 20 years, the Northern Aldborough Festival has forged a reputation for presenting the leading lights of the classical music world as well as encouraging up and coming stars – all set in and around the spectacular setting of Aldborough village near York.

Harrogate Theatre

Visitors enjoy the lavish Victorian interior of Harrogate Theatre, but there is nothing old fashioned about its offerings!  The bang up to date programme includes home grown productions, touring pieces, community theatre and even a thriving comedy club – not forgetting the hugely popular annual pantomime which plays to sell out audiences.

Knaresborough FEVA

The historic streets of Knaresborough come alive each August with the sound of this annual community arts festival where live music, street theatre and performance join food, drink and creative art and design in the rich melting pot which is FEVA!

North Yorkshire Open Studios

A once a year opportunity for an insider view on the workshops and studios of North Yorkshire’s brightest and best creative talent – 114  locations allowing the visitor to discover the rich seam of culture running through this beautiful landscape.

Ripon International Festival

The ancient city of Ripon hosts its own Autumn festival in a range of atmospheric venues, centred on the cathedral, but including the ancient churches and grand houses of the surrounding villages.   Celebrating the broadest range of music and performance from jazz, flamenco, folk, choral, literary and theatre, the event has attracted some of the finest orchestras in the country to delight audiences from near and far.

Gilbert & Sullivan Festival

In 2014, Harrogate welcomed the annual International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival with open arms to its new home!  This summer event is truly international, attracting visitors from all corners of the globe with 2000+ performers playing in sell-out venues throughout the town.
