Yorkshire Secures the 2019 UCI Road World Championships.

12th October 2016

Categories: News

The governing body of world cycling, the UCI, announced today that Yorkshire had been successful in its bid to host the 2019 Road Cycling World Championships.

We are delighted that the UCI has chosen Yorkshire as the venue for the culmination of the world cycling calendar in 2019 where the very best cyclists from around the world will vie for the title ‘World Champion’.

“Harrogate has already expressed in interest in being involved, having shown that we are capable of putting on a world class event when the town hosted the first Tour de France finish in 2014, and saw the first Yellow Jersey of the race awarded.” said Michael Newby, Director of Visit Harrogate.

“We are all looking forward to seeing just how Harrogate can be part of this major sporting event.” he added.

We know from 2014’s visit of the Tour de France that Yorkshire’s roads provide a gruelling and undulating test for even the best riders in the world.  We can be sure that the competition in 2019 will be fierce, the riding will be hard and the welcome will be fantastic.

Find out about all the great cycling in and around Harrogate on our cycling pages.

The World championships will see around 12 races take place, each one culminating in the crowning of a new world champion, and the awarding of the much coveted Rainbow Stripes, or Rainbow Jersey which the winner will wear for the next year of racing.

With this number of races over the course of the championships the world will get another chance to see the amazing countryside, the beautiful towns and the remarkably varied terrain that Yorkshire contains.

Right now the best cyclists in the world are racing for the Rainbow Stripes in Doha and the new wearers of the Rainbow Stripes are emerging.

We are looking forward to seeing Yorkshire and, we hope, Harrogate returning to the world stage with this fantastic opportunity to build on the legacy of the Tour de France and cement Yorkshire’s place as a Global venue.
