Fountain’s Abbey new Play Area is open!

12th August 2016

Categories: News

This summer saw the opening of the new children’s play area at the visitor centre for Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Gardens.

Under the shade of the surrounding trees the new play area has been created to reflect both the abbey structure and the surrounding landscape, providing an imaginative playscape where youngsters can hop, skip and jump their way along scramble nets, a wobbly bridge and an 8 meter rope bridge.

Bigger features such as the 31 metre zip wire and fireman’s poles guarantee grins for the active and adventurous.  In addition there are scramble nets and posts, swings, a slide and a wobbly bridge.

This new play area not only replaces the old one, but adds a whole new location for families to spend time when they visit Fountains Abbey, with something for all age groups.

The playscape has been built from sustainable timber and hand spliced rope.  It sits within its surrounding woodland rather than dominating it adding to the sense of exploration and discovery.  The designs used in its creation draw from the Abbey and the rest of the Studley Royal estate.

Jennifer Taylor, Visitor Experience Manager at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal said, ‘The whole ‘playscape’ is entirely new and it’s been great to see it taking shape over the last few weeks. It’s totally transformed the area and its lovely how it fits in around the woodland. It’s going to be fantastic to see children playing and having fun on it over the summer holidays.’

Alongside the continuing work to restore the Watergardens to their original vision, this year’s Folly installations and the new medieval farming and vegetable garden on display at Swanley Grange, it all means Fountains Abbey has heaps to offer this summer for visiting families or residents looking for a great day out.
