Beningbrough, on the outskirts of Harrogate, with its eight acres of gardens and 18th century mansion is a real treat to enjoy all year round.
Outside, you can explore the beautifully arranged formal gardens, several herbaceous borders, less formal areas managed for wildlife as well as sweeping lawns. There are many perfect spots for a picnic and visitors return time after time to watch the seasons changing when different plants are at their best. During the winter months, the gardens will also feature a themed outdoors art exhibition.
Picture postcard views can be seen from the garden and the 370 acres of parkland offers opportunities to explore riverside walks, ancient trees and hidden wildlife on walks from 20 minutes to 2 hours.
With a diverse history of prosperity and loss, ranging from the dreams of a wealthy teenager, to tenants paying just £1 a week, Beningbrough is a place of reinvention. Read the stories about the different owners through its 300 year history.
For art lovers
The collection inside the house includes 18th century portraits on permanent loan from the National Portrait Gallery in London, as well as a changing, annual exhibition of artwork including sculptures, from a number of lenders. Also in the house is a fine collection of porcelain and furniture, as well as intricate craftsmanship on the wood carving, plasterwork and wrought-iron work.
The wilderness play area is perfect for children to let off steam; popular activities include building a den, climbing the pyramid tower, walking the rope bridge or sailing off in the boat. Bikes and trikes are also available for the little ones to use whilst you wander round the gardens.
Inside the house, the hands-on interactive galleries can be enjoyed. Dress up as lord or lady of the house, sit for your own virtual digital portrait or try sculpting a new nose for a sculpture.
During the school holidays there are trails and activities for a full day out, these are updated on the website and social media.
