The National Trust cared for Beningbrough, on the outskirts of Harrogate, with its eight acres of gardens, historic rooms and changing art, is a real treat to enjoy all year round.

Beningbrough for garden lovers

Outside, you can explore the beautifully arranged formal gardens, several herbaceous borders, less formal areas managed for wildlife as well as sweeping lawns and a kitchen walled garden. There are many perfect spots for a picnic and visitors return time after time to watch the seasons changing when different plants are at their best.

The year garden is experiencing something of a renaissance with designs by RHS Gold Award winner Andy Sturgeon slowly taking shape including the Pergola. This autumn and winter see the development of the new Mediterranean Garden, due to open by summer 2024.

Please note, some areas of the garden may be closed during the construction work.

Beningbrough for art and history lovers

Step inside and uncover the architecture of this grand hall. Created after John Bourchier’s Grand Tour and especially time spent in Italy. The detailing and craftmanship is even more evident since the installation of a new lighting scheme as part of recent work.

The ground floor historic rooms tell the story of a country house. Through the people of the estate and key collection items, find out about different periods of time and pockets of history and their influence on what you see today.

Don’t miss the second-hand book room in the library, take time out and browse the shelves or head to the Victorian laundry and imagine life as a maid in times gone by.

Beningbrough for families

The wilderness play area is perfect for children to let off steam; popular activities include building a den, swinging high on the cantilever swing, balancing on the clamberstack or let your imagination loose in the Wendy House. Take yourself on an adventure and tick off some of the '50 things to do before you're 11 3/4' playlist.

During the school holidays there are often trails and activities for a full day out, these are updated on the website and social media including when to book for the popular Storytime with Father Christmas event.

Eating and shopping

The walled garden restaurant serves morning coffee, afternoon tea and hot lunches made from seasonal homegrown and locally sourced produce as well as children's lunch boxes with sandwiches, snacks, drinks and fruit.

The brew house close to the children's play area is open on busy days and serves hot and cold drinks, snacks, cakes and ice creams and offers a dog friendly place to stop for a pause and grab your takeaway.

The stables shop has an extensive home and garden range with the local ranges from Yorkshire businesses and others inspired by places in the care of the National Trust.

For a longer walk

Picture postcard views can be seen from the garden and the 380 acres of parkland offers opportunities to explore riverside walks, ancient trees and hidden wildlife on walks from 20 minutes to 2 hours.

Useful Information:

  • Toilets including accessible and baby change are open behind the brew house and in the stables area close to the shop and car park.
  • Electric scooters (for outdoor use only) are available to borrow - pre-book to ensure available.
  • Dogs on leads are welcome in most areas of the garden and in the parkland.
