2019 - The Road World Championships in Harrogate

In 2019 the UCI Road Cycling World Championships (or ‘The Worlds’) will be coming to Yorkshire and every race be ending in Harrogate

For one week, the elite of world cycling will take to our now famous roads in pursuit of glory, and the much coveted Rainbow Stripes by being first across our famous finish line next to the Stray.

Expected to take place in September, the 2019 World Championships will bring cyclists specialising in all disciplines of professional road cycling to Yorkshire to race it out in team time trial, inividual time trial and full length road race.

Previously, in Yorkshire

Yorkshire & Harrogate’s link with cycling goes back many years, but recently it was rejuvenated when in 2014 the world’s biggest cycle race, the Tour de France, held its opening two stages in Yorkshire and the first race finished in Harrogate.

The racing, and the scenery and the simply unprecedented crowds meant those two days of racing went down in Tour de France history as the most momentous start to the race, described by race organiser Christian Prudhomme as the “Grandest Grand Depart ever”.

Now in Yorkshire

The incredible support and popularity of the Tour de France led to the creation of the Tour de Yorkshire, an annual stage race across the county that was first held in 2015.

Despite being new to the racing calendar the Tour de Yorkshire has fast become a favourite among fans and riders alike.  The unique terrain, that in some stages might never be flat, and the incredible crowds that line the route regardless of the weather have led to riders returning year after year.

Harrogate revived its finish town status in 2017 for both the women’s race and stage 2 of the men’s race.

Coming to Yorkshire

The UCI Road Cycling World Championships will be based in Harrogate between 22 and 29 September 2019, with every race finishing on our iconic Tour de France finish line alongside the Stray.

In contrast to les tours de Yorkshire, and France, the World Championships, or Worlds, are decided by just one race, so there are no stages, and less space for protective team tactics.

The winner of each race, (Road Race, Time Trial etc) will earn the honour of wearing the iconic rainbow stripes in then following year’s racing across the world.

The races will start in all four counties of Yorkshire and showcase some of the most challenging and rewarding cycling roads in the world as each race makes its way to the finish line in Harrogate.

With the unrelenting undulations, technical winding sections or the Yorkshire roads, combined with stunning scenery, Yorkshire 2019 will be the highlight of the sporting year and put Yorkshire, and Harrogate at the centre of the cycling world.
