Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal
Surrounded by beautiful North Yorkshire countryside, this World Heritage Site has a lot to offer for a thoroughly enjoyable day out.
The magnificent ruins of the once prosperous Fountains Abbey, the largest monastic ruins in the country, sit alongside a Georgian water garden that is sure to delight your senses. This breath-taking landscape is also home to a Jacobean manor house known as Fountains Hall, Studley Royal medieval deer park, a beautiful Victorian church and Cistercian water-mill.
On your visit you’ll discover the rich but turbulent history of the abbey by joining a guided tour, reading about it in Porter’s Lodge or picking up an audio guide from admissions.
Studley Royal water-garden
Wander along to the tranquil water gardens and admire the beautifully designed ponds, classical statues and visit the many follies dotted throughout the grounds. Don’t miss the High Ride path, with the stunning Surprise View looking out over the abbey and dare yourself to pass through the dark Serpentine Tunnel.
On your visit
Kids full of beans? Bring them along to let off steam in the children’s play, which is full of fun things to climb on and over - including a miniature wooden abbey.
Find the perfect spot for a summer picnic on the abbey green, or indulge in some delicious home-made treats from the restaurant and Studley Royal tea-room looking out over the lake.
Don’t miss the shop either! It’s packed full of seasonal delights – from candles, fragrances and homewares, to books, cards and garden gear – you will find the ideal gift for your loved ones. You don’t need to pay to get to the shop, so come along at any point within our opening times to find the perfect present.
