Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Water Garden
Surrounded by beautiful North Yorkshire countryside, this World Heritage Site has a lot to offer for a thoroughly enjoyable day out.
The magnificent ruins of the once prosperous Fountains Abbey, the largest monastic ruins in the country, sit alongside a Georgian water garden that is sure to delight your senses. This breath-taking landscape is also home to a manor house known as Fountains Hall, Studley Royal medieval deer park, a beautiful Victorian church and Cistercian water-mill.
Fountains Abbey
Walk under the vaulted ceiling of the cellarium, through tall arches and marvel at the vast windows into the nave. Wonder at the way the monks tunneled the river and peer up the towering structure of Huby's Tower.
Guided tours are not able to run at the moment and Porter's Lodge is closed. If you'd like to learn more about the history of the site, there are guide books available to purchase in the shop.
Studley Royal water-garden
Wander along to the tranquil water gardens and admire the beautifully designed ponds, classical statues and visit the many follies dotted throughout the grounds. Don’t miss the High Ride path, with the stunning Surprise View looking out over the abbey and dare yourself to pass through the dark Serpentine Tunnel.
