St. Mary's - The Old Church of Pateley Bridge
Built in the late 13th Century, the remains of this Parochial Chapel sits high above the town amidst a small woodland area. The church was reconstructed in the 17th Century and the tower was built, which is opened to the public during the annual Heritage Open Days events. The church fell into disrepair during the early 1800s and finally closed in 1826 having become too small for the congregation, too expensive to maintain and too difficult to reach due to the severe gradient of the hill. While the roof was removed to fund the construction of the new church, St. Cuthbert’s.The old burial ground of the church includes many early headstones, including the grave of “Mary Myers of Northwoods (died) 1743, aged near 120 years”.
