The route loosely follows the route of the old Nidderdale LNER Branchline railway as it crisscrossed the River Nidd on its way up Nidderdale from Ripley Junction through the picturesque villages of Hampsthwaite, Birstwith, Darley Summer Bridge and Low Laithe before arriving in Pateley. Offering gentle riverside scenes, great vistas along the dale and grand view of Guise Cliff that stands high above the village of Glasshouses this route is a scenic must for visitors.
